A Season of Thanks: Why I’m Grateful for Asheville This Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving hits differently when you live somewhere like Asheville, North Carolina. The fall season here is one for the books, and is filled with beautiful autumn leaves and crisp air, but it's really the people that make the place so worthwhile. The ones who show up for their neighbors, who turn meals into moments to connect, and who believe no one should be alone or hungry on a holiday.
Each year, I find myself reflecting on just how lucky I am to be a part of this community. The way businesses, volunteers, churches, and locals all come together shows that everyone has a place at the table.
If you've ever spent time in Weaverville, you probably already know about Blue Mountain Pizza. If you haven't, let me tell you, this place is so much more than just great food. Every Thanksgiving, they close to regular business and open up their doors to everyone, offering a free Thanksgiving meal. This is gratitude in action, and is filled with people gathered over mashed potatoes and pie, sharing stories and feeling seen in their community.
Blue Mountain Pizza, 55 N Main St., Weaverville
12 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 27
Another place I hold close to my heart is 12 Baskets Cafe. Tucked into West Asheville, this cafe serves rescued food and warm meals every week, no questions asked. Around Thanksgiving they step it up even more by creating a beautiful, welcoming space where everyone belongs. They do this with respect and kindness. If you're in town over the holidays and want to see our community in action, go see them, or better yet, ask how you can help.
610 Haywood Road, Asheville
Free, hot meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 27
We talk a lot about what makes Asheville special. The hikes, the breweries, the food scene, and the accommodation. But in November, what makes Asheville shine is its heart.
If you're staying at the Log Cabin Motor Court over the holiday season, you're already a part of it. You're minutes away from all of this warmth. Take a walk downtown, share a meal, volunteer your time, or just be present. This town gives so much, and its even better when you give back.
